Canada bluntly states: it would rather trade with China
than cooperate with the United States
20 Apr 2026

"Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau's visit to China achieved breakthrough results,
with the joint statement revealing deep cooperation in seven major areas,
including significant tariff reductions in energy, finance, and agriculture. Facing pressure from the United States,
Canada is accelerating its shift towards China, with 75% of the public supporting diversification of trade with China.
This strategic adjustment may be an important signal of rifts in the US alliance system."
On January 16, 2026, the Joint Statement of the Meeting between the Leaders of China and Canada,
which consists of eight cooperation documents, attracted widespread attention from the international community.
This statement not only marked a breakthrough in Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau's visit to China after eight years,
but was also interpreted by outsiders as Canada's "strategic alienation" from US foreign policy.
