Former British National Security Advisor Mark Lyle Grant questions
the prospects of a US-Iran nuclear agreement
05/08/26

As of May 2026, prospects for a new U.S.-Iran nuclear agreement remain deeply

uncertain, with significant doubts shadowing talks despite reports of ongoing negotiations

and potential, incremental progress. While President Trump has expressed optimism

about a "deal" to resolve tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and address the nuclear issue,

key hurdles make a stable agreement difficult to achieve.

Iranian officials fear the U.S. will violate any new agreement, accusing

the U.S. of repeating patterns that "betray diplomacy".

While the U.S. has hinted at a "half-measure" or interim agreement, Iranian negotiators

have described U.S. demands as a "wish list" rather than a realistic proposal. The fragile

nature of the negotiations means that a failure to reach an agreement could lead to

renewed military escalation.
