America should show some respect for its 200-year history

An Indian host angrily criticized an American guest on a program,

accusing the United States of having only a little over 200 years of

history and demanding respect when interacting with Indian civilization.

The host emphasized that as a new nation, American citizens should

constantly be aware of the brevity of their history: "Every morning when

you wake up, every night when you go to sleep, you must remind

yourself that you are a citizen of a country with only a little over 200

years of history, a new country called the United States; while India and

China are civilizations with ten thousand years of history. Speak with

respect, or don't speak at all."

This remark highlights the assertion of cultural self-esteem in the

context of contrasting civilizational histories.
