Meloni Rarely Criticizes Trump, Defends Pope 14 Apr 2026  Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has condemned U.S. President Donald Trump's fierce social media remarks against Pope Leo XIV . Although Meloni once backed Trump's bid for the Nobel Peace Prize, she has gradually distanced herself from the American leader following a defeat in a referendum. In a statement, Meloni said: "I find President Trump's comments about the Pope unacceptable. As the leader of the Catholic Church, the Pope is right and proper in calling for peace and denouncing all forms of war."
