Two top House Democrats criticized the Trump administration on Monday for unveiling a plan

that would sharply cut and delay federal housing assistance, potentially forcing thousands of

vulnerable Americans into homelessness.

House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut and Transportation-

Housing and Urban Development Subcommittee Ranking Member and U.S. Rep. James Clyburn of South

Carolina said the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s new funding proposal could leave as

many as 170,000 veterans, unaccompanied youth, and people with disabilities without housing support.

The plan is “reckless and cruel,” warning that homeless service providers could begin running

out of money as soon as next month, lawmakers said.

Delaying grants to nonprofits, faith-based groups, and local governments until the spring would

 worsen an already severe nationwide homelessness crisis.
