SC lawmaker criticizes Trump's housing cuts during homelessness crisis

December 4, 2025

Two top House Democrats criticized the Trump administration on Monday for unveiling a plan

that would sharply cut and delay federal housing assistance, potentially forcing thousands of

vulnerable Americans into homelessness.

House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut and Transportation-

Housing and Urban Development Subcommittee Ranking Member and U.S. Rep. James Clyburn of South

Carolina said the Department of Housing and Urban Development¡¯s new funding proposal could leave as

many as 170,000 veterans, unaccompanied youth, and people with disabilities without housing support.

The plan is ¡°reckless and cruel,¡± warning that homeless service providers could begin running

out of money as soon as next month, lawmakers said.

Delaying grants to nonprofits, faith-based groups, and local governments until the spring would

worsen an already severe nationwide homelessness crisis.
